The Embassy of Sierra Leone in South Korea has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sierra Leonean Students’ Union in Korea, signaling a new phase of collaboration between the diplomatic mission and the student community.

The event, held at the Embassy, opened with a warm welcome address from His Excellency Ambassador Paul Sobba Massaquoi, who underscored the importance of maintaining close ties between the Embassy and Sierra Leonean students pursuing higher education in South Korea.

Ambassador Massaquoi emphasized that having a student representative was crucial for fostering communication and building stronger cooperation. He revealed plans to officially open a new Embassy space soon, an event expected to attract key dignitaries from the Sierra Leonean diaspora and development partners.

“The Embassy is not an isolated body,” Ambassador Massaquoi remarked. “Its success depends on the active involvement and partnership of Sierra Leoneans in all sectors.”

He further described the MoU as a “living, working document” that would be periodically reviewed to align with changing priorities, adding that the student union should actively support its implementation to reflect shared goals and aspirations.

Mrs. Bayor,  Acting Head of Chancery (HOC), congratulated the newly elected Student Union Executive and reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting the union’s programs. She proposed several joint initiatives, including:

Coordinating volunteering and internship opportunities for Sierra Leonean students in Korea.

Establishing a Student Alumni Network to promote mentorship and career advancement.

Enhancing the visibility of the Student Union through Embassy platforms and outreach.

Developing and maintaining an updated database of Sierra Leonean students across Korea.

She also advised the union to obtain a certificate of registration and a designated office space to facilitate the opening of a bank account.

Ambassador Massaquoi suggested that the farewell ceremony for graduating students be formalized as an annual event to recognize their contributions to the Sierra Leonean community in Korea. He pledged the Embassy’s support in securing a venue and providing souvenirs for outgoing students.

He also directed the acting head of chancery to prepare an attestation document to assist the student union during its registration process.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Massaquoi pledged to initiate assistance and donation drives to support communities in need back home. He encouraged the Student Union to submit project proposals addressing national challenges such as healthcare, education, and social welfare — citing, for instance, the need for an elevator at the Youyi Building in Freetown.

Speaking on behalf of the student body, the President of the Sierra Leonean Students in South Korea, Mr. Michael Komba Smart thanked Ambassador Massaquoi and his team for their dedication and support. He noted that the MoU would benefit future Sierra Leonean students studying in Korea by fostering greater unity and institutional collaboration.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties reaffirming their shared commitment to student welfare and national development through continued partnership and dialogue.
