Sierra Leone Ambassador Visits Gangnam Public Health Center to Strengthen Healthcare Collaboration

The Ambassador of Sierra Leone to South Korea, H.E. Paul Sobba Massaquoi, visited the Gangnam Public Health Center in Seoul to gain insights into South Korea’s advanced healthcare system and explore opportunities for collaboration. Organised by the Cultural Diplomacy Club, the visit fostered an exchange of expertise to improve healthcare outcomes in both nations.
Ambassador Massaquoi was welcomed by key figures, including Dr. Jong Chul Rhee, Director of the Gangnam Health Center; Jo Yun Za, Head of Health Management; Hong Jong Nam, Director of Health Administration; Kwon Gwang Nam, Head of Disease Management; Catalina Lee, Chairman of the Cultural Diplomacy Club; and Rika Hauschild, its CEO. Local government representatives were also present, including Gangnam Council Member Hyangsook Lee and District Council Member Son Min-gi.
Dr Rhee provided a detailed presentation on South Korea’s public healthcare framework, showcasing strategies for tackling pressing issues such as ageing populations and low birth rates. Ambassador Massaquoi shared the healthcare challenges faced by Sierra Leone, emphasizing the need for community-driven initiatives and innovative solutions.
The discussions highlighted the importance of international partnerships in enhancing healthcare systems globally. Ambassador Massaquoi expressed appreciation for South Korea’s innovative programs, underscoring their potential relevance to Sierra Leone’s efforts to improve access to quality care.
The ambassadorial delegation toured Gangnam Public Health Center’s cutting-edge facilities, which serve as a model for community health initiatives. Key highlights included:
1. General Health Check-up Facilities: Offering comprehensive health promotion and support services.
2. Metabolic Syndrome Care Center: Focused on preventing and managing metabolic disorders.
3. Healthcare Center for Women and Children: Dedicated to maternal and child health, promoting healthy pregnancies and parenting.
4. Vaccination Facilities: Ensuring accessible and efficient immunization programs.
Gangnam’s success in addressing South Korea’s declining birth rate was particularly notable. The centre’s tailored family support programs have contributed to an increase in birth rates within the district, defying national trends.
Ambassador Massaquoi praised the visit as a “fruitful and inspiring experience” and expressed optimism about future collaboration between Sierra Leone and South Korea. The visit marks a step forward in leveraging shared knowledge and innovation to address global healthcare challenges.
